How to Make Fake Badges for a Costume

Whether for a police officer, EMT, correctional office or firefighter, a fake badge will help complete the look of a costume. When you cannot find the right badge to fit your costume, however, you will need to get a little crafty and make your own fake badge using inexpensive and readily available items.

Things You'll Need

  • Badge template
  • Copy paper
  • Printer
  • Pencil (optional)
  • Scissors
  • Thin cardboard
  • Aluminum foil
  • Craft glue
  • Markers
  • Paint (optional)
  • Safety pin with bar backing
  • Print the desired badge template on a piece of paper. You can find various free badge templates online or make your own template by drawing a shield or star-shape onto a piece of paper. Cut the badge template out with a pair of scissors.

  • Place the badge template on top of a piece of thin cardboard. Trace the badge onto the cardboard with a pencil. Cut the badge out of the cardboard with a scissors.

  • Cover the badge with aluminum foil. Use craft glue to secure the foil to the back of the badge. Alternatively, use paint or markers to alter the color of the badge.

  • Write the desired information on the badge. For example, if the badge is for a police officer costume, write “POLICE” in bold lettering on the badge with a black marker. Another option is to glue a completed fake badge onto the cardboard.

  • Apply craft glue to the back of a safety pin bar. Press the back of the safety pin bar to the back of the cardboard badge. Hold the bar in place for several seconds. Allow the glue to dry completely before wearing the badge.
