Things You'll Need:
- "Blank" shell
- Pot for boiling water
- Paper towels
- Non-toxic craft paint
- Paintbrushes
-
Step 1
Select the right size shell for your hermit crab. The opening should be about 1/4 inch for a small crab and 1 1/2 to 2 inches for a larger crab. The crab should be able to withdraw completely into the shell and cover the opening with its large claw.
-
Step 2
Make sure there are no rough spots around the opening or inside the shell. Reject any shells that have cracks, since crabs need to keep a bit of moisture inside their homes. Crabs also seem to prefer shells with smooth mother of pearl linings.
-
Step 3
Boil the shell in water for at least 5 minutes. Drain and dry it with a paper towel. Allow the shell to cool completely.
-
Step 4
Decide on a design for your shell. Stay simple with a solid color in a primary, metallic or neon shade, or go bold with stripes or polka dots. Opt for a sports theme---paint your favorite team's logo or a basketball or other ball design. Take ideas from nature---include a lady bug, daisy or other flower or a rainbow---or paint your shell with your favorite cartoon character or superhero design.
-
Step 5
Let the shell dry completely before placing it in your hermit crab's habitat. Make sure the paint is fully adhered to the shell; otherwise, your hermit crab might ingest paint chips.

on 9/10/2009 Decorating shells for you hermit crabs is childish and a sign of a badly informed owner. Paints, jewels, and makers are toxic to the crabs. It will chip off, it will be eaten by the crab.
