Hermit crabs need new shells as they grow. Shells provide protection and security for hermit crabs, but they can also be a fashion statement for your pet. One of the simplest ways to customize your hermit crab's shell is with a painted design or color scheme.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • "Blank" shell
  • Pot for boiling water
  • Paper towels
  • Non-toxic craft paint
  • Paintbrushes
  1. Step 1

Select the right size shell for your hermit crab. The opening should be about 1/4 inch for a small crab and 1 1/2 to 2 inches for a larger crab. The crab should be able to withdraw completely into the shell and cover the opening with its large claw.

  2. Step 2

Make sure there are no rough spots around the opening or inside the shell. Reject any shells that have cracks, since crabs need to keep a bit of moisture inside their homes. Crabs also seem to prefer shells with smooth mother of pearl linings.

  3. Step 3

Boil the shell in water for at least 5 minutes. Drain and dry it with a paper towel. Allow the shell to cool completely.

  4. Step 4

Decide on a design for your shell. Stay simple with a solid color in a primary, metallic or neon shade, or go bold with stripes or polka dots. Opt for a sports theme---paint your favorite team's logo or a basketball or other ball design. Take ideas from nature---include a lady bug, daisy or other flower or a rainbow---or paint your shell with your favorite cartoon character or superhero design.

  5. Step 5

Let the shell dry completely before placing it in your hermit crab's habitat. Make sure the paint is fully adhered to the shell; otherwise, your hermit crab might ingest paint chips.

Tips & Warnings
  • Because hermit crabs can be choosy about their shells, provide them with a variety of choices. Avoid using glitter, stickers or other craft items that might fall off the shell.
  • Do not try to decorate a shell if the hermit crab is inside. Never force a hermit crab out of its shell. Don't paint the inside of the shell.

on 9/10/2009 Decorating shells for you hermit crabs is childish and a sign of a badly informed owner. Paints, jewels, and makers are toxic to the crabs. It will chip off, it will be eaten by the crab.
