Hair buns are among the simplest yet most elegant styles for women with long tresses, making not only for a pulled-together look, but also for a practical style that keeps the hair out of the face. There are a variety of styles ranging from the simplest twist of the hand and a hair elastic to more elaborate updos reserved for formal occasions. The two styles described below are classic, chic variations on the hair bun requiring a few simple tools and about a minute's time

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Hair elastics
  • Bobby pins
  • Hair spray
  • Pair of chopsticks

    Making a Chignon

  1. Step 1

Pull hair back into a ponytail and secure with an elastic, twisting the hair tie around once or more as needed.

  2. Step 2

Take the end of the ponytail and wrap it around the tied base, twisting it until the bun lays flat against the scalp.

  3. Step 3

Hold the newly wrapped bun with one hand and use the other hand to secure with bobby pins around the edges of the bun. Alternately, you can use another hair elastic to secure the chignon.

  4. Step 4

Spray the bun and crown of the head with hair spray to give the hairstyle extra staying power.

  5. Making an Asian-inspired Bun

  6. Step 1

Use one hand to gather hair into a ponytail at the crown , but do not tie the hair back. Pull all the hair up at the top of the head for a more elegant look, or lower near the nape of the neck for a more casual style.

  7. Step 2

Twist the hair around, starting at the ends, and form a coiled bun.

  8. Step 3

Use your free hand to insert one chopstick into the bottom of the bun so that it is pointing upward diagonally.

  9. Step 4

Twist the chopstick slightly so that you can insert it down the center of the bun, making sure that it is flat against the scalp. The bun should now stay in place without your hand supporting it.

  10. Step 5

Place another chopstick through the bun, starting at the top and going on a downward diagonal, crossing over the first chopstick. This step is optional but is a good idea for those with thicker hair to keep the bun secure.

Tips & Warnings
  • A chic variation on the chignon is a low side bun, made by gathering hair into a low side ponytail at the neck and twisting around, then securing with an elastic. Try embellishing your hair bun by leaving a few wispy pieces of hair loose near the temples, or by placing a headband over the crown of your head.
