How to Clean Draperies
Draperies serve not only aesthetic purposes but can also help to keep out the the sun in the summer and the cold in the winter. When it comes time to clean the house, this functional piece of décor is often overlooked. Meanwhile dust and dirt are able to accumulate, potentially damaging the fibers over time and wreaking havoc on those who suffer from allergies. Use the brush attachment of the vacuum cleaner and gently vacuum the drapes while they are still hanging to remove as much loose dirt and dust as possible.

Take down the draperies and shake them out well.

Wash the drapes in the washing machine with the setting on delicate cycle using cool water and the normal amount of laundry detergent. Wash the drapes by themselves; an overcrowded washing machine will not effectively clean the draperies as they need room to move around while washing.

Dry the draperies in the dryer on the low setting until they are completely dry or hang them outside to dry.

Tips & Warnings
If the draperies come out of the dryer wrinkled, iron only the back side on a low setting. Hand washing is also an option if the drapes are small. Use cool water and a mild dish soap.
Not all draperies can be washed at home. Draperies that are pleated, have a tag that says "dry clean only," or are simply too big to fit in the washing machine should be taken to a professional cleaner.
