Things You'll Need:
- Measuring tape
- Gas log kit
- Pipe wrench
-
Step 1
Clean the fireplace. Remove any wood and the log rack, if there is one. Sweep the area and dispose of ashes and debris.
-
Step 2
Measure the interior of the fireplace: the width, depth and height.
-
Step 3
Purchase a fireplace gas log set appropriate to the size of your fireplace. The fireplace retailer should be able to assist you in choosing the correct size. The appearance of the logs can differ from set to set. Choose logs that you find visually pleasing.
-
Step 4
Turn off the gas to the fireplace.
-
Step 5
Disconnect the wood-burning log lighter. This is typically a long pipe, dotted with holes, that is screwed onto the gas line coming into the fireplace. Use tools appropriate to the fittings, which might include a pipe wrench.
-
Step 6
Replace the wood-burning log lighter with the burner that comes with the gas log kit. It should screw into place.
-
Step 7
Set the logs directly over the burner, on a log rack.
