Historically, elopement has been looked upon as a rash decision. Pop culture pictures two teenagers sneaking out of their parents' houses to run off to get married quickly and secretively. The place to go? Las Vegas, Nevada. In Las Vegas, a couple could get married with minimal restrictions and no questions asked. Today, however, Las Vegas has positioned itself as a wedding destination. While it's still very easy, a Las Vegas wedding no longer has the stigma it used to have.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Two people at least 16 years old, or parental consent if younger than 16
  • Driver's license or other form of state-issued ID
  • Social Security number
  • Money for Marriage License fees and to pay the chapel
  1. Step 1

You can't get married in Las Vegas without a marriage license. For that, you'll have to go to the Clark County clerk's office at 200 S. Third St. in Las Vegas, Nevada, on the first floor. You will be required to fill out a form and stand in line to get your license. Both of you must be present. The clerk's office is open from 8 a.m. to midnight daily.

  2. Step 2

Both of you will have to show your ID's. Accepted ID's include a driver's license, a passport, a birth certificate (with an additional picture ID) and a voter registration card. A clerk's office employee will fill out the paperwork, and you must verify that all information is correct. The fee for a marriage license is $55.

  3. Step 3

After the license is issued, you can get married. There are many chapels to choose from, though most require reservations. Many chapels, such as Graceland Wedding Chapel, allow you to call and make reservations for the same day.

  4. Step 4

Many resort hotels also have wedding chapels and services available to help you on your special day. If you have some time to plan, contact the catering department of the hotel where you're staying. Many times, the staff can help you and your guests create the perfect wedding. A resort hotel may provide the relaxing atmosphere you need on what can be a nerve-wracking day.

  5. Step 5

After the vows, make sure the officiant and your witnesses sign your marriage license. This is vital to ensure your marriage is legitimate. Many times, a chapel will have extra people on hand to witness your wedding in the event you don't have guests.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be prepared to wait in line at the clerk's office. The office issues 120,000 marriage licenses per year, so it's often busy. If you have time, spend a couple of days in Las Vegas after your wedding for a honeymoon before starting your new married life.
  • Make sure the information on your marriage license is correct. Some errors, such as spelling mistakes, can be changed, but others, such as a wrong name, can't be fixed and may invalidate your marriage.
