Instructions

  1. How to Make a Peek-a-Boo Apron

    • 1

Lay out your cotton fabric. Cut a 12-inch by 35-inch panel across the grain of the fabric. Cut a 6-inch by 35-inch pocket panel, also across the grain. You now have a 10-inch by 18-inch strip of fabric remaining. Cut that into three strips, each 3 inches wide by 18 inches long. One of these strips will form the waist, while the other two will serve as ties for your vintage apron. Cut a strip of tulle 18 inches by 35 inches for your peek-a-boo apron (see Reference 1).

    • 2

Apply bias binding to the top edge of the pocket. Lay the peek-a-boo apron pocket on the cotton apron piece and baste around three sides. Add two vertical seams, evenly spaced to divide the apron pocket into three compartments.

    • 3

Apply bias binding around both sides and the bottom of the cotton apron panel, securing the pocket to the apron (see Reference 2).

    • 4

Sew each tie to the waistband piece, right sides together using a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Fold in half, right sides together, and stitch the raw edges of each tie, leaving the waist portion open. Turn right side out and press, being sure to press the edges of the waistband section under.

    • 5

Pin the tulle to your peek-a-boo apron. Use a long basting stitch to run two lines of stitches near the top of the apron. Pull the bobbin threads to gather the tulle and cotton until it neatly fits the waistband. Pin into place.

    • 6

Sew the right side of the waistband to the wrong side of the apron. Press the seam up toward the waistband. Bring the front of the waistband over the seam and to the front of the apron. Topstitch into place.

Tips & Warnings

  • Add embroidery or applique to the cotton apron or pocket panels before sewing your vintage apron.
