If you have ever been exposed to asbestos, you may be concerned about mesothelioma (which is cancer of the mesothelium). If you do not know what some of the signs are, there are some steps you can follow to check yourself.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

First, realize that mesothelioma is pretty rare. It is not a common form of cancer, and is almost always caused by exposure to asbestos. So if you have never been exposed to asbestos, you probably shouldn't worry about mesothelioma. If you have been exposed, it can take a LONG time for the symptoms of mesothelioma to start showing, sometimes up to 30+ years!

  2. Step 2

Shortness of breath is a major symptom. You may also notice chest pain or tightness. Mesothelioma may also cause one to cough.

  3. Step 3

Insomnia is another symptom of mesothelioma. This may be accompanied by unusual weight loss and a loss of appetite.

  4. Step 4

Mesothelioma may also cause a difficulty in swallowing. This may also increase weight loss due to the fact that it is hard to swallow food.

  5. Step 5

If you have these symptoms, contact your doctor. However, be advised that these symptoms could indicate a number of things and it does not mean that you have mesothelioma.
