How to Post a Room on Craigslist

Looking for a roommate? Have an empty room in your apartment? Need to sublet for the summer? You can easily post an advertisement for the room on Craigslist. Your contact information remains anonymous and people from all over the world can find your empty room.

Things You'll Need:

• Computer
• Internet
• Email account

1. Go to http://www.craigslist.org and click on the city nearest you. This allows you to post within a smaller network making it easier to find your specific posting.

2. 

   Click "rooms / shared" under the "housing" header. When you do this, you will see other postings within your network. Scan a few of these to see how they are advertising and to collect ideas for your post.

   When you are finished browsing other postings click on "[post]" in the upper-right corner.

   Next, click "I am offering housing"

   The next choice depends on whether you are looking for a short or long-term roommate. For a long-term roommate, click "rooms & shares". For a short-term room, click "sublets & temporary".

6. Next, choose the area closest you.

7. This next page is where you create your advertisement.
   1. List rent (either by week or by month).
   2. If under temporary, select the number of rooms.
   3. The title is the first thing that people will see. Make it catchy.
   4. Location is the area of the city where you are. People sometimes search by areas.
   5. You need to include your email for people to contact you and to confirm your posting. You have the option of anonymizing your email (a random one will be generated for others to see, but will be forwarded to yours).
   6. Create the body of your advertisement. List a little about yourself and who you are looking for. Give lots of specific details about the apartment such as utilities, internet, and nearby locations such as groceries and parks.
   7. Add pictures. People are more attracted to advertisements with pictures and you can include up to four.
   8. Fill in the street and cross street.
   9. Click continue.

8. Review your posting and click Continue.
   Read the "Terms of Use" and Accept.
   Type in the security words to prove you are not a robot.

9. An email will now be sent to the address you provided. Open the email and click on the link provided. Review your advertisement one last time and click publish. Keep your email because you can use the link to edit your room posting later.

Tips & Warnings

• Be clear and precise. People don't want to waste their time with people or rooms that are not compatible with them.
