Living in a home without yard does not mean that you cannot have the dog that you want.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Knowledge
  • Patience
  • Time
  • Love
  • Flexibility
  1. Step 1

Research the type of dog you wish to acquire. Get a good understanding of the breed and the type of exercise and training that will be required for this breed. Some larger breeds need more exercise than others. Make sure you have the time and knowledge to put into your new pet.

  2. Step 2

Decided whether you would like a puppy, or if perhaps adopting an adult dog would be a good choice. Many adult dogs are already housebroken, and already have some of the necessary training. If you choose to adopt an adult, many rescue organizations offer a foster to adopt option. With this option, you foster the dog for a few weeks, then have the option to adopt it. This can be a very good option, for it will allow you to have the chance to see if the dog is a good fit in your home.

  3. Step 3

If you choose to bring home a new puppy, remember that a puppy takes a lot of time and patience. In my opinion, if you choose to purchase a puppy, a breeder is the best bet. Purchasing from a breeder allows you to meet the puppy's parent/parents, and gives you an idea of the temperment of the dog, any health issues, and overall appearance.

  4. Step 4

Whether you decide to get a puppy or an adult, make sure you have some time to be around when you bring your new family member home, in order to help it get acclimated to its new environment. Make sure to bring it to a vet right away for a check-up.

  5. Step 5

In order for your pet to be a welcome part of the community, proper training and exercise is a must! When living in an apartment or townhouse, it is important that your dog not be barking all hours of the day and night.

  6. Step 6

Take the time and do the research on the best way to train your dog. If this is a problem, there are local pet trainers that can help you with many of the problems you have with your pet. Many offer to come to your home and work with you and your pet if needed.

  7. Step 7

Exercise, exercise, exercise! Just because you don't have a yard, does not mean you cannot get a dog. Try to walk your dog three times a day. Make sure the walks are atleast 10 to 15 mins. This will also help to socialize your dog with people and other dogs while also giving them the exercise and stimulation they crave. Research local dog parks or take your dog on walking trails. I feel not owning a yard gets a better bond with your pet since you are with them during their exercise rather than just letting them run in a back yard alone.

  8. Step 8

If you are going to be away from home for a long period of time, see if there is a neighbor or friend who can come by and walk the dog.
