How to Write Thank You Notes for Friends and Family

There are many times when your friends and family take time to give you a helping hand. Maybe you just graduated, and they gave you money to help you get on your feet. Maybe you got married or had a baby, and they showered you with gifts. If they are so willing to help you start a new chapter in your life, take the time to show your appreciation by writing them a great thank-you note.

  • Write the notes by hand. Thank you notes should not be typewritten or cut and pasted. It is more personal to give handwritten notes.

  • Create a list of every single gift you received and who gave it to you. This will ensure that you can make each note personal. Begin by greeting the giver, for example, "Dear Grandma." Then say thank you and mention each item they gave you.

  • Discuss how the gift will be used. For instance, if you received diapers at a baby shower, say something along the lines of, "They sure will come in handy when our little one arrives." If the giver gave you cash or gift cards, mention how you plan to put it to use, for instance, "It will help a lot as we stock up on baby essentials."

  • Offer your thanks again, and sign the note.
