Step 1
Get recommendations. Before you try out a new stylist, ask friends and family for suggestions. If you like the hair of someone you know, chances are their stylist is great at listening to what a person wants in a cut.
Use social networking to further get ideas on where to go. A request sent out on Twitter or Facebook will likely get you a wide variety of selections. -
Step 2
Do a test run. Instead of going in to get a major style change, see how well the stylist does with a simple cut. Ask for a trim and describe exactly the type of cut you normally have. See how well the stylist listens to you and gets you the cut you desire.
-
Step 3
Describe your hair routine to the stylist. If you want a style that just lets you blow dry and go, tell him or her that so she can get an idea of how much time you plan to spend on the style.
-
Step 4
Be specific with what you want. Don't use general terms like "texturizing" or "feathering" with a stylist. Describe exactly what you want your hair to look like.
-
Step 5
Bring a picture. People are visual creatures by nature, so it should come as no surprise that stylists often do better with a cut when they see a picture of what the end result should be. If you can't find a picture with your ideal style, find a couple with the elements you want. Bring them all in and let your stylist know you want bangs from one picture, back layering with the next, etc.

on 8/18/2009 Have you noticed that there are an increasing amt of ppl walking around with really messed up hair cuts? This is due to the passive aggressive epidemic that is spreading throughout hair salons. If you have not gotten a hair cut, you may consider cutting your own hair...it will save you the physical and emotional trauma from these passive aggressive hair stylist. You can **never** identify a passive aggressive hair stylist! Never. They will be extremely friendly to you the whole time...this is to mask their anger/insecurities. But once they are done with your hair, you will be left with at least several of the mishaps mentioned in the above article, on purpose. We need to join force and boycott salons by cutting our own hair. These people are making a *****GOOD**** living taking their anger out on your hair. For those of you sporting a hair cut from a passive aggressive hai...
