Tongue piercings, besides looking really cool, are very easy to manage. Proper care will minimize the risk of infection and will also help a new tongue piercing heal quicker.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ibuprofen, Tylenol, or Advil
  • Alcohol Free Mouth Wash
  • Ice
  1. Step 1

If you were not wise enough to take some Ibuprofen before you got your tongue pierced, you might want to do that. It will dull the pain and reduce the swelling.

  2. Step 2

Suck on ice. This also eases discomfort and swelling. Ice will be your best friend the first 4-6 days after you get your tongue pierced.

  3. Step 3

Rinse your mouth with alcohol free mouthwash. This kills germs and reduces your chance of infection. Be wary of what mouthwash you use because if it contains alcohol it will burn and could cause discoloration.

  4. Step 4

Eat smart. Foods that are easy to eat, mashed potatoes, soup, bananas, etc. will not cause discomfort. Try not to eat a lot of dairy products because they introduce bacteria into your mouth and could cause infection.

  5. Step 5

Rinse your mouth with mouthwash after every meal.

  6. Step 6

At night, sleep with your head elevated with pillows. Laying flat will cause swelling.

  7. Step 7

Don't mess with it. Don't touch it. Don't play with it. If you leave it alone it will heal faster. Also refrain from smoking and oral sex until your tongue fully heals.

Tips & Warnings
  • Salt water can also be used as a replacement of mouthwash.
