How to Estimate How Big a Puppy Will Get

The easiest way to estimate how big a puppy will be is to look at the dogs parents. As long as the dog is a pure breed it will likely be roughly the same size as one of its parents. For male puppies, compare with the father, and for female puppies compare with the mother.

If your dog is a purebreed, but you don't have access to the parents look online and find the average weight range for your dog. For example labs are usually 65-85 lbs.

If you want to be even more precise. Estimate how big a puppy will get by comparing its paws and head sizes to those of its litter mates or other dogs of the same breed and age. Larger paws and head, usually mean it will be on the upper edge of the average size range.

While it is more error prone to estimate how big a puppy will get for a mixed dog there are ways to do it. You need to know how old the puppy is and how much it currently weighs.

Using the current age and weight you can estimate with the following information. At 6 months a dog is around 75% of their adult weight, at 4 months a puppy is at around 50% of their adult weight, at 2.5 months they is around 25% of their adult weight.
