For many women, the inability to have an orgasm is both frustrating and heartbreaking. This also affects the male partner. The man feels inadequate. Inability to achieve and orgasm can and oftentimes does adversely affect a relationship. Many women will abstain from sex because it is a source of frustration and embarrassment rather than pleasure. There are many causes which prevent women from having an orgasm.

  1. Step 1

    The first stop needs to be the doctor to rule out any physical causes such as a physical or medical problem. Hormonal shifts due to pregnancy, menopause and perimenopause are leading causes. Medical conditions such as diabetes, urinary tract infection, stroke, high blood pressure, hypothyroidism and endometriosis along with other diseases are also causes.

  2. Step 2

    Medications can cause the inability to achieve an orgasm. If you are taking medications for high blood pressure, diet aids, diabetes, allergy among other drugs. They may be the culprit. Start by researching the drugs on the internet. Do a Google search for (drug name) and sexual side effects. Call your local pharmacy and speak to the pharmacist about the potential side effects of the medication you are taking. If you find it is a prescribed medication causing the problem, call your doctor to discuss options. Do not stop prescription medication without a doctor’s approval.

  3. Step 3

    Psychological issues can have devastating effects on the ability to have an orgasm. Emotional strain and stress due to a loss or unhappiness within a marriage can be a cause. Previous sexual abuse, depression, panic disorders and bad body image are also a cause. See a psychologist or counselor with or without your partner to try to work through emotional issues.

  4. Step 4

    The normal aging process can inhibit orgasms. Physical changes to a woman’s body such as vaginal dryness and vaginal sensitivity occur in many woman as they age. A doctor will be able to help.

  5. Step 5

    If you are the partner of a woman who is unable to have an orgasm, please realize this is not their fault they are not doing this on purpose. Encourage her to see a doctor. Be supportative and understanding.
