Unlock a T-Mobile G1

If you're looking to unlock your T-Mobile G1, don't use an unlocking service or search for a hack. This is a free, safe procedure that T-Mobile Customer Care & tech support can do for you. Cell phones can be unlocked if you plan to travel overseas, so you can use an international sim card. T-Mobile will do this for you for free, and within 2 days. Don't fall for any illegal measures! These steps can also be taken to unlock almost any other T-Mobile device.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • G1
  1. Step 1

If you are a good standing T-Mobile subscriber and have been with them for atleast 90 days, you can call the T-Mobile Customer Care/Tech Support by calling from a landline phone. Do not use your cell phone to call, because then you won't be able to unlock. Using a landline phone, dial 1-800-937-8997. In the message prompt follow the instructions, then state you wish to unlock your phone. You will be forwarded to T-Mobile Tech Support.

  2. Step 2

Once you are connected to tech support, tell the representative you are traveling overseas, (or your particular reason for the unlock), and you need to unlock your T-Mobile G1. You will need to verify your account, then the rep will have you follow a few steps.

  3. Step 3

The T-Mobile rep will have you locate your IMEI number. The IMEI number is a serial number particular to your phone only. The procedures you are following will only work for your G1, and yours only. The representative will have you enter *#06#. This will display your IMEI number. There are other ways to find this number, but the representative will have you do this anyway, as this is the most accurate.

  4. Step 4

Once they have your IMEI number they will need an e-mail address to send the unlock code to. Use any e-mail address you have access to. They will e-mail you your unlock code, it will not be sent to your T-Mobile G1.

  5. Step 5

Your information will be submitted, and the T-Mobile rep will tell you that you should receive the unlock code by e-mail within 24-48 hours. In the e-mail you will see instructions on how to unlock your device. This will include your unlock code that is particular to your phone. Remember, this code cannot be used for any other phone.

  6. Step 6

    WARNING

If you enter your unlock code and it doesn't work, DO NOT TRY AGAIN. Even if you entered the code incorrectly, DO NOT RE-ENTER. This can destroy your phone, almost like a self destruct. Your T-Mobile G1 will think you are trying to hack, and there isn't anything T-Mobile can do about it. Call Customer Care by following the instructions above if the code doesn't work the first time.
