How to Unlock a T-Mobile G1
T-Mobile and HTC work together to lock new G1 smartphones so that they cannot be used with SIM cards from other wireless carriers. Each T-Mobile G1 has a unique unlock code, which, when entered, will unlock the phone and allow you to use your G1 with wireless service from hundreds of additional GSM carriers in countries around the world.

Call T-Mobile's customer service department at 800-866-2453 and request the unlock code for your T-Mobile G1.

Slide your G1's screen to the right so you can see the keyboard, press the battery cover release on the top of the phone and then remove the battery cover.

Lift the battery out of your G1.

Slide the T-Mobile SIM card out of the SIM slot and replace it with a SIM card from a different wireless carrier. Return the battery and the battery cover to the phone, and then hold the "End Call/Power" button to turn on your G1.

Type your G1's unlock code into the prompt that appears on your screen to unlock the phone.

Tips & Warnings
The T-Mobile G1 only supports 3G data on two frequency bands. When using your T-Mobile G1 on another carrier's wireless network, you may be restricted to 2G data speeds.
