If your Apple computer works slower than it used to and you notice low memory messages or if you just want to add memory to enhance the system's performance, adding memory is fairly easy and fast. You don't even need tools to do the job. Consult your user's guide to determine the right memory card for the computer and then you can perform the memory addition. It only takes about 20 minutes to install the memory.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Apple user's guide
  • Correct memory card
  1. Step 1

Power down the computer and wait 10 minutes before working on the internal components. This ensures that the system is all the way off and that it's cooled down.

  2. Step 2

Disconnect all the cords from the computer except the cord for the power source.

  3. Step 3

Touch the metal PCI cover to get the static out of your body. Once you've removed the static from your body, refrain from moving around until you're finished installing the memory. Moving around will create more static.

  4. Step 4

Disconnect the cord to the power source.

  5. Step 5

Remove the computer tower's side panel.

  6. Step 6

Locate the memory compartment on the computer's processor board.

  7. Step 7

Remove the processor tray by lifting the latches and pulling the tray out gently. Place it on a flat surface so that you can easily access the memory ports.

  8. Step 8

Fold the tabs down on an empty memory port.

  9. Step 9

Hold the memory card by the edges and insert it into the memory port.

  10. Step 10

Close the tabs to secure the memory card in place.

  11. Step 11

Replace the processor tray, connect all the cords (connect the power cord last) and start up the computer.

  12. Step 12

Look at the LED lights on the memory ports to ensure that the ones that correspond to ports containing memory cards are lit. If they're lit, you've successfully added memory to the computer. Replace the side panel to finish the installation.
