Become a Swim Teacher

Swim teachers have rewarding jobs as they teach children and adults how to be confident in and around the water. Water safety is imperative for children to learn and a swim teacher teaches them how to respect the water, and not to fear it. If you think you would be a good swim teacher, you'll need to receive certain certifications in order to do so.

Instructions

    • 1

Receive your CPR certification. You'll need to be certified in all types of CPR--infant, child and adult. This certification is available through your local Red Cross chapter. To find your local Red Cross chapter, go to the site found in the Resources section below.

    • 2

Complete your certification in a general First Aid course. This will also be offered through your local Red Cross. You'll become certified in dealing with things like cuts, bruises, blood loss and broken bones.

    • 3

Receive your lifeguard certification through the Red Cross. Lifeguard certification lasts only three years, so if you've had certification and let it expire, you'll need to do it again.

    • 4

Take a Water Safety Instructor Course, offered by your Red Cross. This course will teach you about safety in the water and is necessary for aspiring swim teachers.

    • 5

Promote yourself as a swim teacher when you've received all of the above certification and training. Decide if you want to teach private, one-on-one lessons or choose to teach at a public pool to a larger group.
