A "cab file" is a compressed or zipped file with the file extension of .cab. Cab files are also referred to as "archive files," and they are often used as a storage schema in installation programs. For example, Microsoft uses cab files to organize data in various Office software application installations. You will need an archiving program, such as Cab File Maker, to create or unzip a cab file. Cab File Maker is a free program. See Resources for the download site.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cab File Maker or other archiving tool
  1. Step 1

Download and install the free Cab File Maker application (see Resources). Open the Cab File Maker application. Click "Add Files."

  2. Step 2

Select all files to be added to the archive. Hold the "Control" key to select multiple files. Note: Drag and drop the files onto the application shortcut as a quick way to add files to the application.

  3. Step 3

Name the new output cab file and select the output file location.

  4. Step 4

Click "OK" to create the cab archive. If many files are selected, a progress indicator will show on the screen.

  5. Step 5

Navigate to the location of the new cab file in Windows Explorer and verify. Double-click on the file to open and verify the contents.
