How to Use a Metered Dose Inhaler

Asthma is an inflammation of bronchial tubes constricting breathing, and if the symptoms are not treated, asthma attacks may occur. One way to deal with asthma symptoms is controlling it with inhalers. An inhaler is a medical device that releases medicine directly into the lungs. There are different types of inhalers to use, but one of the most common and easiest to use is a metered dose inhaler.

Instructions

      Take the cap off of the inhaler, and lift the tab so it is pointing straight in the air.

      Shake the inhaler.

    • 3

      Exhale completely, pushing all the breath out of your body.

    • 4

      Put your mouth on the inhaler opening, and inhale deeply for three to five seconds to release the medicine and suck it into your body.

    • 5

      Hold your breath for a few seconds to allow the medicine to penetrate into your lungs.

Tips & Warnings

  • The medicine only comes out when you suck in. Be sure to breathe deeply enough to suck the medicine out.
