MOV (short for movie) files are the default file for Apple's Quicktime. When you upload any video onto your Mac, it will most likely default to this format. MPG or MPEG (short for Moving Picture Experts Group) files are movie files that were designed to be smaller in size with approximately the same quality. This makes MPG files better for viewing on the web or on an iPod. However, to convert MOV files to MPG files on a Mac, you need to install a third-party program such as iSkysoft or Mac Video Converter.
