The Windows operating system relies on file associations to know which programs open what types of files. Most files have a file extension, a three- or four-letter code, such as .DOCX or .TXT, that identifies the file type. On occasion, these file associations are changed when installing programs or when a computer has been infected with malware. Restoring or changing file associations is a simple task and can go a long way toward customizing your computer to your needs and preferences.
