An elephant ear plant is a tropical plant that grows as a perennial plant in the warmer regions of the world. In colder climates, it can be grown indoors or as an annual plant during the summer months. This plant was named for its very large leaves that resemble elephant ears. Sketching an elephant ear plant could be a fun and simple activity. Once the basic shape of the leaf is mastered, all that would be necessary is to fill in the shape of the plant to finish the sketch.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Picture of Elephant Ear Plant
  • Colored Pencils
  1. Step 1

Visit www.centralfloridafarms.com (see resources) to find a picture of an elephant ear plant to give you an idea of what an elephant ear plant looks like. You may also be able to find a photo in a plant book.

  2. Step 2

Begin by drawing the ground in which the elephant ear plant is growing. This will be a horizontal line across the page. Vary the direction of the line somewhat to give a realistic appearance. Add in the stems of the elephant ear plant somewhere in the center of the page, extending up from the horizontal line.

  3. Step 3

Add the leaves to create the elephant ear plant. Make your plant as full as desired. A nice, healthy elephant ear plant is quite full and has many leaves that fill out the body of the plant. The leaves should be overlapping. As you fill in the leaves, not every part of every leaf will be visible, so begin adding partial leaves as well. Continue adding leaves until the plant is as full as desired.

  4. Step 4

Add some color in the leaves with colored pencils to give them a realistic appearance. You could vary the color of the leaves slightly to give them more depth.
