Western Style Cowboy Spurs, By Crockett

Western spurs are part of a long tradition of equestrian discipline dating back to the ancient Roman Empire. The spur, a metal tool designed for wear on the boot heel, can be found in a variety of shapes and styles, but its purpose remains the same: to serve as a riding aid to maneuvering a horse. With the help of popular western films, riding spurs have become a staple of western fashion. So, whether you're the next rodeo hero, or dressing for show, wearing western spurs is as easy as putting your boots on.

Instructions

    • 1

Check your spurs for these four basic components: the rowel (the wheel with radiating points, or basic prong), the neck (where the rowel is mounted), the yoke (the U-shaped end) and the spur straps.

    • 2

Place the yoke against the spur rest just above your boot heel. The neck should be pointing down with the "U-shape" resting comfortably at the ankle.

    • 3

Pull the spur strap around the front of the boot and attach it to the opposite end of the yoke. This will hold the spurs in place.

    • 4

Adjust the tightness of each spur strap until snug.

Tips & Warnings

  • Most equestrian organizations maintain strict rules and penalties for the use and design of spurs that could injure or otherwise harm an animal.
