Kippot

A kippah (or the plural kippot) is a small skull cap that is worn by Jewish men in the synagogue or when praying. The kippah is also known widely in Yiddish as a yarmulke. Kippot are generally available at the door of a synagogue if you are visiting; however, when you need to have your own kippah, they are quite readily available. You can buy them or you can make them. When creating your own, you can make your kippah as simple or as ornate as you like.

Things You'll Need

  • Small piece of cloth (Kippot are generally 9 inches in diameter.)
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine, or needle and thread

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a circular piece of cloth. The best type of cloth to use will have a velvet texture, so the kippah will be soft. Use a thick piece that can be sewn and will be durable over time. Most kippot are black, but you can have any color you desire. The size of the circular piece should be at least 9 inches in diameter, and can be larger if you need it to be.

    • 2

Lay the piece of cloth down flat on a table, and cut a piece roughly 2 inches wide from the edge of the cloth tapering to the center of the cloth. Cut along the radius from the edge, so that you have a triangular gap in the piece of cloth.

    • 3

Close the gap in the cloth by bringing the two sides together and sew the two edges of the gap together. This will give the circular cloth a cone shape. Sew a cross stitch along the outer edge of the kippah to prevent fraying.

    • 4

Sew any decorative designs into the kippah at this point. Kippot can also be knitted or crocheted, and traditionally girls make them for their boyfriends.
