A sleep mask is a fabric mask that surrounds the front of the head, covering the eyes. The mask is designed to facilitate a good night's rest by blocking out light. Some sleep masks help eliminate sounds too. A sleep mask can be used while traveling on a plane, bus, train or other such transportation to help block out surrounding light and sounds. They can also help with sleeping during daylight hours and in noisy environments. Sleep masks come in a range of materials, including silk.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Purchase a silk sleep mask. If you have allergies, look for one that is hypoallergenic, with no dyes or perfumes. Keep in mind that some sleep masks have scents such as lavender sewn in over the eye section. Decide if that is something you want in your sleep mask. Sleep masks can be found at discount stores and online vendors.

  2. Step 2

Get in bed. Place the silk sleep mask over your eyes. Close the straps in the back if you have a mask that has Velcro straps. If you have an elastic strap sleep mask, pull it over your head and adjust the straps so they are snug enough to stay in place but not so tight as to be uncomfortable.

  3. Step 3

Close your eyes and relax with the silk sleep mask on your face. If you find the mask is too tight, make adjustments. Get used to the sensation of having the mask rest on your face.

  4. Step 4

If too much light or noise comes through the sleep mask, or if it is to heavy, consider trying a different brand. Most silk sleep masks are very light and feel comfortable next to the skin.

  5. Step 5

Allow a few nights to get used to the sleep mask. Some people are comfortable right away while others may need a few nights to become accustomed to the mask.
