Change Your Yahoo Messenger Screen Name

Yahoo Messenger is a popular instant-messaging application that uses the information from your existing Yahoo account to create a messaging profile. Yahoo Messenger can also import all of your Yahoo mail and other types of contacts into your "Friends" list so you can start chatting right away. You cannot change your screen name without starting a new account. But if you want to use a different name when you are chatting on Yahoo Messenger, you can create an alias.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Log in to Yahoo Messenger. Click "Messenger" from the toolbar in the main window.

  2. Step 2

Click on the "My Account Info" button. A Yahoo Messenger page will open in the default Web browser. You might be required to log in again.

  3. Step 3

Click "Edit/Create Aliases" in the task pane to the right of the browser window.

  4. Step 4

Click "Add an Alias" under "Manage Your Yahoo Identities." Type in the new screen name you want to use and click "Save." If that screen name is in use, you will be prompted to choose another. Close the browser window when finished.

  5. Step 5

Enter a chat using an alias by clicking on "Messenger" in the Yahoo Messenger toolbar, pointing to "Yahoo Chat" and selecting "Join Room." Select an alias in the "Join Chatroom As" drop-down menu.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can create up to six aliases.
