How to Make Your Own Martial Arts Equipment

Learning martial arts is a great way to learn discipline, self-defense and also a great way to burn fat and get in shape. In order to learn the disciplines, moves and techniques, you will need a few pieces of equipment that will help you practice and perfect what you are learning. You will need a heavy bag to practice strikes such as punches, elbows and kicks, and you will need a grappling dummy for submission holds.

Instructions

  1. Heavy Bag

    • 1

Take some foam and line the inside of an Army canvas bag with it. Cut a round foam piece and place it on the bottom of the inside of the bag. Lining your bag will prevent it from getting lumpy when you fill it up.

    • 2

Pour a 10-pound bag of sand into the Army bag. Cut another round piece of foam and place it on top of the sand you just poured into the bag.

    • 3

Repeat the process in Step 2 at least three more times until the bag weighs about 50 pounds.

    • 4

Start at the bottom of the Army bag and wrap the whole bag in duct tape all the way to the top of the bag. This adds support to the bag, keeps it from busting and also adds a bit more cushion for your hands.

    • 5

Attach a chain to the top of the bag and suspend the bag from a sturdy beam.

    Grappling Dummy

    • 6

Take an old sweat shirt and pair of pants and use duct tape to seal the end of the sleeves and the legs of the pants. Use enough duct tape to make sure these open holes are sealed up with no gaps for the stuffing of your dummy to fall out.

    • 7

Stuff the legs and waist portion of the pants with old clothes that you no longer want. You can also get old towels and blankets to use as stuffing as well.

    • 8

Take old clothes and towels and stuff the body and arms of the sweat shirt until it is full.

    • 9

Place the bottom of the sweat shirt over the top of the pants and duct tape them together. You will need to use about three or four rolls of tape to make sure that the two body pieces of your grappling dummy are sturdy and will not come apart.

    • 10

Remove a mop head from an old mop and cover the head in duct tape. Wrap the mop head in an old sweat shirt and cover that in duct tape as well.

    • 11

Stick the end of the mop head into the neck portion of the sweat shirt attached to the body of the grappling dummy. Wrap duct tape around the sweat shirt and "neck" of the dummy to secure it to the body.
