Download some music software such as FL Studios or Reason. These programs are specifically designed to make and record beats, and many professional beat makers use them.

Decide the tempo of your beat. The tempo or speed of the beat will greatly depend on the type of beat and the style of music you are making. For example, a techno beat will be faster at around 120 to 140 beats per minute (bpm), while the average rap beat is about 95 bpm. Set the bpm to match your style of music.

Create a drum pattern to use for your music beat. There are a lot of different combinations of kick, snare and hat drum sounds that you can use in your program to create the drum pattern. One typical beat is to have the kick hit on the first beat, the snare on the second, the kick on the third and the snare on the fourth.

Record a bass line for your beat. The program will come with an instrument you can use as a bass. Arm the record button of your program and hit the space bar. This will initiate the record sequence and then you simply play the notes on your MIDI controller.

Add various instruments and record your melodies for the beat. The melody will consist of various instruments that will be brought in at different times during the beat to create the verse, chorus and bridge section of the beat. These melodies can be made up of rhythm chords and scale lead sections.

Mix your beat. The mixing process will take the longest, but is the most essential part of the beat-making process. Mute all the instruments you used in your song. As you unmute each instrument, adjust its volume so that each individual instrument compliments the other, by either making it louder or quieter.
