Instructions

    • 1

Become a certified fitness instructor. This is necessary so that you know the proper ways to develop exercise plans, and can advise your clients on the best exercises to meet their fitness goals. Make sure your certification is through a respected organization, such as ACE, NASM, NFPT, or AFAA.

    • 2

Get hands-on personal training and fitness instruction experience. This can be gained through working alongside an experienced instructor, taking special courses, or working at a fitness club. This is important because certification does not necessarily include hands-on training. If you can find an accredited instruction program that includes hands-on training and certification, it will save you time and money.

    • 3

Get certified to be a group fitness instructor. Though this is optional, it will open up your career opportunities as you can train clients one on one and in small or large groups. This certification is available through the same organizations that provide basic personal trainer certification. Sometimes, you can get a discount if you obtain both certifications at the same time.

    • 4

If you're enrolled in a college or university, major in exercise science, nutrition, or kinesiology. A college education is not necessary for this career, but having an educational background in the same field will help when it comes to career advancement. In the case of those majoring in nutrition, it will give them the knowledge necessary to advise clients regarding proper and healthful eating.

    • 5

Determine your strategy for integrating Christianity into your methods. Some Christian fitness trainers use scriptures to motivate their clients, encourage their clients to take care of themselves and eat well based on the Word, or offer clients Bible study to go along with their fitness training. Whichever method you choose is up to you, and there is no wrong or right way to incorporate Christianity into your training methods.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you choose to go in business for yourself either get insurance to cover accidents or have each of your clients sign a liability waiver.

  • Do not try to start this career without proper fitness certification. You can end up hurting a client. Becoming a certified fitness instructor gives you credibility.
