One type of inhaler

Inhalers are prescribed to those suffering with lung or bronchial issues. The purpose of the inhaler is to get the prescribed medicine into the bronchial tubes and into the lungs so it can work effectively. Incorrectly using the inhaler can affect how thoroughly and how quickly the treatment progresses. No matter what medicine is being delivered through the inhaler, using it correctly is the only way to assure its effectiveness.

Shake the inhaler once again, and breathe out until you have released all air out of your lungs.

    • 3
      Lips wrapped around mouthpiece

Hold the inhaler straight up, and place the mouthpiece into your mouth, closing your lips tightly around it.

    • 4
      Inhale

Inhale deeply, and as you inhale press down on the top of the inhaler and release a dose of the medication. Suck the air deeply into your lungs.

    • 5

Hold your breath for as long as you can, up to 10 seconds.

    • 6

Wait one minute, and then repeat this process if your prescription calls for more than one dose or puff.

    • 7

Take a sip of water and swirl it around in your mouth to clean it of any residue. Spit out the water, and then take a drink.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep your inhaler clean by removing the canister and running warm water through it. Store the canister at room temperature.

  • Do not use your inhaler more than your prescribed amount, as this can cause unwanted side effects which will vary, depending upon the medication you are taking.
