Things You'll Need:
- Computer
- Internet Access
- Online Dating Site Membership
- Digital Camera
-
Step 1
Before you begin, read through some of the other online dating profiles. This will help you to get a feel for what people are writing and how you can set yourself apart from the crowd. You do not have to be a talented writer. However, please use spell check! If you can, have a good friend read your profile before you post it just to double check for errors.
-
Step 2
Choose an appropriate user name for yourself. Using words like 'nutty', 'crazy' or 'wild' might sound fun, but you might not attract the person you are really looking for -- unless you are interested in dating someone wild and crazy!
You can use your first name with a set of numbers (don't use your birthday) or a name that describes a hobby or business you are involved in. -
Step 3
Do not write things in your online dating profile that you think people want to hear. Be yourself. Your goal is to meet the person who is interested in the real you. Make sure that your writing reflects that.
If you are a very serious person, don't come across as the class clown. What a surprise that will be when you meet someone who is expecting a comedian and you don't have a funny bone in your body. -
Step 4
It is best to NOT make your profile just a list of your best qualities. Throw in a few of your quirks. No one wants to date a flawless robot.
Describe yourself in about 150 words. This is enough to keep the reader's attention without revealing everything. You want readers to be interested enough to ask more questions. -
Step 5
accurately fill out your online dating profileDo not make your profile just a list of your best qualities. Throw in a few of your quirks. No one wants to date a flawless robot. You do not want to "over-sell" yourself by stating that you are the "best catch known to man" or "the hottest guy you'll ever meet". Being positive is great but no one will be interested in dating a super-hero.
Describe yourself in about 150 words. This is enough to keep the reader's attention without revealing everything. You want readers to be interested enough to ask more questions. -
Step 6
It is recommended that you do not write an entire story of your recent break-up, divorce or custody battle. This is a red flag that you are not ready for a relationship and will only attract people to your profile who aren't interested in a real relationship.
-
Step 7
Do not falsify any information. If you're short, don't describe yourself as tall. If you're curvy, don't fool people into thinking you are very thin. Be proud of who you are!
-
Step 8
Just about everyone writes "I like to take long walks on the beach." or "I like quiet times with a bottle of good wine." What makes you different? This doesn't mean you have to describe every quirk you have, but try to stand out from the crowd by writing down some of your real interests.
-
Step 9
Post several current pictures. Once again, you are going to be meeting people and you do not look the same as you did in high school. The excuse that you don't know how to put pictures on line is not at all believable.
Everyone has a camera or at least a camera phone. In addition, if you can post a profile on the Internet you can learn how to upload a picture!
Make sure your pictures are close up enough so people can see you! Your potential date is not interested in dating the building in the picture. Make yourself visible! -
Step 10
Most of the online dating services require you to post a profile header message that appears when someone does a search for people in their area. Using headers such as "I am the One for You" or "Hi" are not going to help you get noticed.
The header is one of the most important parts of online dating because, aside from your photo, your header is what gets people to click on your profile and read more about you.
Be clever and a little witty, but always be yourself. -
Step 11
Check and double check your profile for errors. Make sure your pictures upload properly. Submit your profile and keep a positive attitude.
Write from the heart and show off your truest self. You want to be a great match for one person, not everyone on the site. Most of all, don't make finding someone become your number one priority. Great things take time!

on 6/21/2009 Well-organized! I like your general theme of "keeping it real". Who would want to meet someone only to see his/her eyes drop because you'd been playing up to be something you're not?
