How to Get Lower Hotel Rates
When you are booking a room locally or in another country you always have to negotiate the price and amenities. Never take the first price or room they offer. Ask if they have any coupons, afternoon tea, discounts, specials, gym, nearby specialties, be creative.

There are two ways to go here. You can shop for a hotel near where you want to stay or you know the exact hotel you want to stay. Check out prices on the internet. Go through all the coupons deals, etc. Call the hotel direct and see what they say. Your travel agent receives at least 10%. When you call the hotel yourself you will sometimes and sometimes not get the same price as the travel agent. It is your vacation not there's- they are not staying in the crummy room they booked for you, do your homework.

When you call the hotel direct request the Director of Sales. Do not ask for reservations.

The cheapest time to go anywhere is the week after Thanksgiving. Las Vegas in the summer is usually less. Whenever kids are out of school is impossible to get a decent rate, let alone car rental deals.

Ask for early check in.
Request late check out. Tell them it is a special occasion - which it is, you are experiencing life.
Make sure you know the price for parking, daily extra rate they now charge, tax, upgrades, etc.
American Express has specials, call them they might get the same room for a lower price.

Tips & Warnings
Sometimes you have exhausted all things, Internet, Direct, etc. - have a travel agent call them and maybe they can get a Ocean View room at half the price - (this happened for me.)
Sometimes if you pay for the room in advance they give you a $100 per night minimum discount.
