If you have ever lost your job, you know the financial and mental impact it can take on you and your family. You can help lessen the financial impact by applying for unemployment benefits. These benefits are typically administered by the state you live in.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet or telephone access
  1. Step 1

Verify that you qualify for MO unemployment benefits. You can find the most up-to-date qualification information on the Missouri Department of Labor website (see the Resources section below for a direct link).

  2. Step 2

Start a claim via telephone (regional claims telephone numbers are available at the link in the Resources section below) or via internet (at the link in the Resources section below) as soon as you become unemployed. You will need to provide information about your reason for job loss, former pay rate, and other employment details.

  3. Step 3

Receive a Notice of Initial Determination of Status as an Insured Worker in the mail. This notice will define your benefits eligibility and status, and provide instructions for future filings.

  4. Step 4

Begin receiving benefits via debit card or direct deposit (whichever you chose when filing) after a one week waiting period.

  5. Step 5

Visit your local Missouri Career Center once every four weeks (or as otherwise instructed). Failure to visit a career center can disqualify you for unemployment benefits. The Missouri Career Centers help you search for and apply for jobs that fit your skill set.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure you follow all instructions and timelines mailed with your initial benefits notice. Failure to follow these guidelines could result in a loss of benefits.
