Step 1
Watch your local newspaper and television for ads about trade shows and expos coming to your area. Determine if admission is free. If admission is not free, it may only be a minimal charge that will be easily offset by the freebies you can acquire.
-
Step 2
Bring a large tote bag or backpack to carry your free items. You don’t want to have to turn anything down because you don’t have a way to carry it home! Be prepared to haul your loot.
-
Step 3
Once inside, visit every trade show display, regardless of how boring it looks. They may have a coupon for another item, or may be giving away a fun promotional item like a key ring or letter opener. Some companies give away food or beverages.
-
Step 4
Enter drawings. This is how advertisers collect names for their mailing list, so be forewarned. You may win a prize at the trade show or get coupons or free offers in the mail.
-
Step 5
Fill out questionnaires or surveys. Some advertisers will reward you with a gift card or free item. Advertisers genuinely want your feedback, and they are willing to bribe you!
-
Step 6
If you go to baby or children’s fairs expos, be sure to take your little ones. There is usually a kids area with inflatables and games. Trade show exhibitors love handing out things to kids.
-
Step 7
Go to the show on the last day. The exhibitors aren’t going to want to pack up everything and drag it back home. Ask the exhibitors if they have anything they want to give away. You can score some serious stuff this way. Also, some exhibitors may have left items behind and you can help yourself.

on 6/28/2009 When I lived near Chicago, I got to go to many terrific shows at McCormick Place. Your advice is resourceful and clever for anyone who wants to take away the good stuff from a show! Thanks!
