Step 1
When you book your hotel room, remember that the person at the desk usually has the power to adjust the room prices, so rather than calling the 800 number, call the local number of the hotel you want to stay at. Ask the something like, " don't you have a special this time of year?" It insinuates that you've heard about a discount, so if there are any, they will be likely to offer them to you.

Step 2
When you check in, tell the desk clerk that you are a frequent guest and ask if they wouldn't mind upgrading your room. If you've never stayed there before, tell them it's your first time in town or that you're traveling for work and tell them you'd appreciate an upgrade. The theory behind this technique is to make them think that you might suggest the hotel to friends or coworkers and also that you would come back yourself.

Step 3
If you're unhappy with anything, such as the heater or air conditioning not working in your hotel room or if the view is bad, let the manager know politely. Complaining really works- you might get a better room, or a free breakfast.
