How to Get a New IP Address

Getting a new IP address, also known as "renewing," is quick and very easy in Windows. No matter your skill set, you can renew your IP address in a few steps.

Instructions

1. Navigate to the "Start" menu and select "Run." The Run dialog appears.

2. Type "cmd" (without quotes) and press the "Enter" key.

3. Type the following line exactly as it appears:

   ipconfig /release

   Then press "Enter." Note that this command may not be recognizable to some versions of Microsoft Windows. If this is the case, type: winipcfg /release

4. Enter the following text exactly as it appears:

   ipconfig /renew

   Then press "Enter."

5. Restart your computer.

Tips & Warnings

• If you're a cable Internet user, you can often renew your IP address by disconnecting the power supply and cable feed to your modem and waiting three minutes.
