Step 1
Start by judging the ball off of the hitter's bat. Try to read the angle and see which way the ball is going to go. Get a quick jump in that direction and keep trying to read the ball as you move.
-
Step 2
For a ball hit to either side of you, you should be able to read the depth of the fly ball pretty easily. The only problem now is getting to the ball.
-
Step 3
For a ball that is it in a straight line to you, take a step back and judge the ball before making a move. These balls are usually very deceptive and are easily misread.
-
Step 4
Run on the tips of your toes so that the ball will not "bounce as you run". Running with your mouth closed will also help you to better judge the ball. Take short, quick strides and try to get under the ball before catching it rather than gliding the the ball and catching it at the last second.
-
Step 5
As you get underneath the ball, try to have your momentum moving forward as you catch the ball so that you can move more easily into your throw. Focus on catching the ball and once you are sure the ball is in your mitt, take a crow hop and make a crisp throw to your cut-off man

Step 6
Congratulations, you have successfully caught a fly ball
