Need to decorate a cake but don’t have a piping bag? Homemade piping bags are a quick, easy, and cheap fix that anyone can accomplish in minutes. You can make your own piping bags using nothing more than a sheet of wax paper and a piping tip. Although a professional decorator’s bag is ideal for icing and frosting, wax paper piping bags will work superbly in a pinch.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Wax paper
  • Kitchen shears
  • Piping tip
  • Icing
  1. Step 1

Cut a large piece of wax paper to a length of approximately 20 inches using sharp kitchen shears. Fold the paper in half, which will create additional support for your piping bag.

  2. Step 2

Create a cone out of the wax paper by wrapping it around your hand, holding the bottom edge together tightly with your fingers. As you wrap, a cone will form. This will create the container portion of your piping bag.

  3. Step 3

Insert the piping tip into the piping bag. Place it inside the cone and make sure it’s facing in the correct direction. Push it down with your fingers until it’s about level with the bottom of the wax paper.

  4. Step 4

Fill the bag with icing, being careful not to add too much or over-fill. Homemade piping bags are easy to break if you aren’t cautious. Fill the bag no more than half way.

  5. Step 5

Twist or fold the top of the piping bag, so that the icing is forced down and secures the piping tip snugly in place at the bottom of the bag. Use a rubber band or kitchen string to tie off the top of the bag, but not too tight. You don’t want it to burst open.

  6. Step 6

Snip off the bottom of the wax paper with scissors so that the piping tip is revealed. Don’t cut off too much, or the tip may fall out. Instead, just cut enough away so that the icing can flow freely from the piping bag.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not try to reuse homemade piping bags or you’ll end up with a huge mess on your hands. They are so cheap and easy to make, you can create one for each different color or type of frosting you are using. You can also make a different one for each type of decorating tip you have.
