Compost Keepers for the kitchen counter top are all the rage right now. These kitchen waste compost holders are a temporary storage solution for kitchen leftover organic material until the compost is able to be transported to a larger compost pile, compost bin, compost mixer, compost turn, or garden compost area.

There are some more stylish options available as composting becomes more popular and more people are turning to growing their own vegetables and food as the economy figures out whether it is in a recession, depression, a dead cat bounce, or ready to come back.

These options are great for holding trash on the kitchen counter; however, they come with a price tag upwards of $20.00 which can buy over 120 eggs at the grocery store. This article will explain a simple easy way to create a cute, stylish, customized compost keeper for FREE. It makes a cute project for kids to do, but best of all, it is dirt cheap especially if you have a little interior paint or spray paint leftover in your garage.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Empty Oatmeal Canister or
  • Empty LARGE Pickle Jar or
  • Empty Large Plastic Pepper Jar or
  • Empty Large Plastic Lidded Container from another food - ricotta cheese, sour cream, etc.
  • Paint

Save and clean an empty container to use as a compost keeper.

An empty large oatmeal container, the cylindrical ones, make good compost keepers. They can be lined with two plastic bags so that dumping the organic matter into the compost pile is easy.

Other containers that work well include large plastic jars, large glass jars, and large plastic containers with lids.

Spray paint or brush a solid color on the container's outside. This color should match your kitchen or decor, preferably.

The container should be sprayed with the lid off so that the lid does not get sprayed stuck in place.

  3. Step 3

(optional) Spray the lid also if desired.

  4. Step 4

Paint a cute customized design or expression on your compost keeper.

    Design ideas:
    A favorite scripture
    A favorite expression
    A favorite poem
    A flower
    Some garden bugs
Match a design already found in your kitchen on tile or plates, cups, etc.

  5. Step 5

(optional) Apply a 2 to 4 coats of clear gloss coat (spray on) or brush on sealer to an intricate design.

Tips & Warnings
  • If an intricate design is painted on a glass or plastic container that you desire to last for years, spray on sealer to preserve the work.
  • For a simple quick solution, just grab an oatmeal container, spray it a solid color, let it dry, add two double bagged grocery bags to the inside to catch the liquids and stink (very easy to keep the oatmeal container clean if you use bags which work as liners). When the container gets old, make another.
  • Spray paint outside in a well ventilated area.
  • Use all recommended safety precautions and equipment when using paints and sealers.
