Step 1
Choose your plants carefully. Consider their size, shape and color. Common, inexpensive plants such as petunias and coleus are good choices for those on a budget. Pay attention to the color of the flowers and foliage. Don't buy just one. Repetition of several plants is what makes for a good window design.
-
Step 2
Use different heights for a great arrangement. Use tall, medium and spill-over plants to create interest. How will the arrangement look when the blossoms are gone? If the foliage has nice shape then it will still look nice. Use flowering plants and vines for a nice balance.
-
Step 3
Use color to dress up your window box. Bright colors will look better in bright sunlight. Use pale colors in shady areas. Experiment with different color combinations to find a combination that appeals to you and compliments your home.
-
Step 4
Make sure you maintain your flowers by deadheading blossoms that quickly fade. Trim plants when they get tall and rangy.
-
Step 5
Consider using herbs and edible plants in your window boxes. You can add color by adding a few pretty flowers such as lavender or sage. Using your herbs will help you maintain a beautiful display and when the cold comes on you can move your plants indoors.
