Step 1
If you can, find the source of your depression. If you know why you’re feeling sad, you’re already on the road to recovery. Maybe you’re depressed over a death in the family, or your lack of money. Whatever the source is, knowing it will help you find ways to get through it.
-
Step 2
Find something else to think about. Dwelling on whatever is causing your depression will only make it worse. You need to find other things to think about that will make you feel better and bring you happiness.
-
Step 3
Talk with someone about it. Often, talking with a friend or loved one can be really helpful in getting over depression. They can console you, and help you find ways to have a brighter outlook. If your depression is because of an ongoing problem, friends and family may be able to help you solve that problem.
-
Step 4
Find an outlet. When you’re feeling sad and down, it’s good to have an outlet for your emotions. Find something that works for you, because its different for everyone. Some people paint, draw, write poetry, sing, dance or engross themselves in a hobby. Try a few things and find something that makes you feel good, and gets your mind off the bad things in your life.
-
Step 5
Take some time for yourself. It’s not good to isolate yourself for long periods of time, but it can be a good idea to spend a little time alone, taking care of yourself and focusing on your own mental well-being.
-
Step 6
Cry. Seriously, sometimes depression will hold on longer if you try to hide it and be too strong. There’s nothing wrong with crying, even for a man. It doesn’t make you weak, it makes you human. Let go and have a good crying jag. Sometimes it can be just the ticket to feeling better.
-
Step 7
Laugh. Hang out with your friends, play a game, do a karaoke night, whatever will make you smile and laugh. Have a good time and remember that nothing bad lasts forever.
-
Step 8
If all else fails, seek professional help. A counselor may be able to help you get through if you can’t do it on your own. Going to a psychiatrist or counselor doesn’t mean you’re crazy, it just means you want the help of someone with experience. Use their expertise to find a solution and become able to move on with your life. Do be wary of doctors who want to just give you a pill and send you on your way. Medication may be needed in extreme cases of depression, but most often professional guidance will be all you really need to regain your mental health.
