Follow the simple steps below to find out how to legally change your name.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    File

Head down to your local courthouse and fill out the necessary name change form. Once you have turned in the proper name change paperwork you will then be asked to place an ad in your local newspaper declaring your name change . This is done to ensure that no one has an issue with the particular name you chose.

  2. Step 2

    Wait

Wait for the required number of days to pass of which your ad needed to be in the newspaper. This amount of days will vary from state to state.

  3. Step 3

    Schedule a Court Date

Next you will need to contact your courthouse and arrange a day to come in and explain the reason(s) why you want to change your name . Upon approval you will be issued official papers stating the "go ahead" of your name change.

  4. Step 4

    Obtain Official ID Documents

You are now set to head down to your local Social Security office to obtain a new Social Security card , recorders office to obtain a new birth certificate , and the DMV to obtain a new ID or drivers license.
