A Distortion Pedal is a very important part of your setup because it creates the foundation of your sound. Selecting the wrong type of Distortion Pedal for your style can result in a poor playing experience.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

This first step in your Distortion Pedal selection process is deciding which kind of playing style you'll mostly be using it for. You want the tones created by the effect pedal to match what your playing. Some of the most popular styles to play are: Classic Rock, Heavy Metal, Metal, Jazz, Blues and Country.

  2. Step 2

Once you have determined the type of music you'll be playing with your pedal, it is time to look at the main types of Distortion Pedals that are available. Each create their own unique tones, and add a certain dimension to your playing.

    Distortion Pedal Categories:
-Overdrive: These are used primarily for Classic Rock. They provide warm, overdriven tones that preserve your guitars natural sound.
-Distortion: These pedals provide more signal modification and can create some great tones. These types of pedals will often add sustain as well to your sound. Recommended for hard rock and blues.
-Fuzz: A fuzz pedal creates a unique tone similar to Jimi Hendrix. These pedals are meant for hard rock.

  3. Step 3

Now that you've decided on what type of Distortion Pedal you would like to buy, it is time to start researching/testing effects that fit into your category. I recommend reading Distortion Pedal Reviews on the internet, and watching videos that explain the dynamics of the pedals. Most of the big music sites on the net will have their "Best Selling" pedals on display, and these are always a great place to start your search. They've become popular because players like yourself have used them, and provided good reviews for them.

  • It's definitely a good idea to try out a Distortion Pedal before you buy it so you know exactly what you are getting.
  • Make sure the pedal is going to provide you with the sound you are looking for.
