Pickles are great for a summer picnic and homemade pickles are even better. 24 hour pickles can be made the day before and are ready to eat the next day. The perfect addition to your grill out or picnic these pickles are fun and super easy to make.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • White Vinegar
  • Water
  • Salt
  • Cucumbers
  • Fresh Garlic
  • Fresh Dill heads
  1. Step 1

    Combine the following ingredients in a large pot and bring to a boil:
    1 cup vinegar
    5 cups water
    1/3rd cup salt
    Some people add 1/2 cup of sugar as well.

  2. Step 2

    Once the vinegar/salt/water (brine) has boiled, set aside and let cool completely.

    While you are waiting for the brine to cool, take 5-6 fresh pickle sized cucumbers and slice lengthwise into wedges.

  4. Step 4
    A whole head of garlic & a few loose cloves

    Peel 1 head of garlic (about 10-20 cloves). Slice the garlic finely.

  5. Step 5

    Put the cucumbers, garlic and 5 or 6 fresh heads of dill into a 1/2 gallon air-tight glass container. A 1/2 gallon jar works great.

  6. Step 6

    Pour the brine over the cucumbers, garlic and dill. Secure the cover and place in the refrigerator.

  7. Step 7

    After at least 24 hours, you can take your pickles out an enjoy them!

Tips & Warnings
  • Try leaving the pickles in for 48 hours - they will be even better!
  • Visit your local farmers market to find fresh pickles and dill heads if you don't have a garden
  • Cucumbers can also be cut into slices instead of spears for the perfect addition to a hamburger

on 9/8/2009 This is very similar to the recipe my mom used when we made pickles! for a hot and spicy touch add more garlic and 1-2 red chile peppers, the longer you leave them the hotter they get... my absolute favorite way to eat pickles!
