Things You'll Need:
- Miracle-grow african violet potting mix.
- At the very least a 20 inch diameter pot.
- Miracle gro bloom booster (15-30-15)
- Wooden stake 9' or Trellis.
- Garden twine.
- Eye screw.
- Hop ribozyme.
- Window screen.
- Watering can.
-
Step 1
Be sure you have good drainage in your 20in bucket/pot. If it dose not you need to be able to add some holes to the bottom of the container.
-
Step 2
After it has an adequate amount of drainage fill the bucket to the very top with potting soil.
-
Step 3
Hop RhizomeNext take your hop Ribozyme and plant it 1 to 1/2 inch below the surface. place it in the ground with the white vines pointing up and plant it horizontally. When putting the soil on top of the Ribozyme do not press or pat just rake the soil over lightly. It needs to be up higher to give the roots moor soil to grow into. The root system will become gigantic and needs all the room posable to grow in.
-
Step 4
Next fill up your watering can with Miracle-grow using the directions on the side of the box, and water until the water pours out of the bottom of the bucket/pot. You will need to be sure water comes out of the bottom of the pot every time you water to ensure all the roots receive nutrients. Only use Miracle-grow once a week for the first month.
-
Step 5
Wooden stake with eye hook.Next insert the eye screw into the wooden stake, and put the stake in at the edge of your bucket/pot. The run a piece of twine long enough to go from the bottom of the bucket/pot, to the top of the stake through the eye hook, and back to the bottom of the bucket/pot. Set the bucket on top of the twine.
NOTE: If you are using a trellis or a chain link fence skip this step. -
Step 6
Hop breaking ground.Next wait, and water every day in three weeks to one month the sprout will break ground. Start looking at the top of the potting mix when it starts to dry out and look grayish; compared to the dark looking wet soil water the hop plant.
-
Step 7
Hops being trained.Next your hop plant is ready to be trained to the twine, or the trellis. To do this just wrap it around or put it through what ever you are training it to. If you are training the hop to a trellis or chain link fence it will need to be done daily. If you are using the stake method when it reaches the top lower the vine so it can grow up a new piece of twine.
-
Step 8
Half way through growing session.Hops grow fast and get big you will need to water your hops every day after a couple of months and you will need to use Miracle-grow twice a week at this point.
-
Step 9
Hops ready to harvest. It is finally time to harvest your hops. They will look like a cone you can squeeze them and oil will seep out. Just pick them and put them in a bag.
-
Step 10
Hops drying. Now you need to dry out your hops and store them. To dry them out take a window screen off your house and spread them on it evenly and allow one to two weeks to dry. You can also set your oven at 100 degrees crack the door and let them dry our over a period of three to four hours. To store the hops place in ziplock bags and freeze.
-
Step 11
Now that you have harvested cut the vine at the soil, let the soil dry out, and cover it to avoid the soil getting wet and killing the Ribozyme. It will grow back every year just repeat steps 6-11.
-
Step 12
Every two years you need to uproot the Ribozyme and cut it in half, then cut the roots back, and repeat with new potting soil.
