How to Install Laminate Floors

Laminate floors can add a touch of distinction and class to any room without the hassle and headache of installing solid hardwood flooring. Laminate floors come pre-finished and can be applied over most existing flooring (except carpet and other laminate flooring) as long as the flooring is in good shape.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Measure the floor to determine the amount of laminate flooring needed. Multiply the length times width of the room to determine the square footage of flooring needed.

  2. Step 2

Clean the floor well by vacuuming and mopping it to remove any dust and debris that could get trapped underneath the new flooring.

  3. Step 3

Install the underlayment in the room. Butt the seams but do not overlap them. Apply tape to the seams to prevent them from moving.

  4. Step 4

Start by laying a full row of uncut planks along one wall. Use spacers or shims between the planks and the wall to maintain a straight line.

  5. Step 5

Cut the last plank in the row. Flip it around and then lay it against the wall and mark where it meets the last installed board. Cut on the mark and then install the plank.

  6. Step 6

Start the next row on the same end of the wall as the cut plank. Make sure that the ends of the planks being installed overlap the plank joints in the previous row by at least 6 inches.
