Winter's dampness and springtime rain often leads to a layer of green mold forming on the siding of your house. These unattractive green streaks usually form along gutter edges and where roof edges meet sections of house siding. Gazing up at your siding, you might think removing this mold would require lots of elbow grease, hard work and a long ladder. That's not the case. This relatively simple home improvement project doesn't require contracting with a professional to beautify the exterior of your home. Let's look at the easiest way to remove green mold stains from siding. This method also cleans house siding too.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Garden hose
  • Empty spray bottle
  • Bleach
  • Step ladder
  • Goggles
  • Plastic sheeting or tarp
  1. Step 1

Mix equal parts bleach and water in the spray bottle and shake the bottle well. Twist the sprayer end to the stream setting. Put your sunglasses or goggles on to protect your eyes from any bleach overspray.

  2. Step 2

Cover any delicate plants with the plastic sheeting to protect against the bleach. Since the solution is watered down, it shouldn't adversely affect your plants unless you spray the bleach directly on the plant. You can skip this step if you choose not to cover plants and shrubs.

  3. Step 3

Evenly spray the areas of mold on the siding. If you prefer, spray the entire area of siding to evenly clean the surface to remove build up and dirt and dust. Use the stepladder if necessary to reach high spots although the long stream of the sprayer should reach relatively high areas. Allow the bleach solution to sit on the stains for at least one-half hour. Spray stained gutters and roof shingles as well to remove moss, mold and dirt.

  4. Step 4

Turn the hose to full water pressure and to a hard stream. Rinse the side of the house from top to bottom to remove both the stains and the bleach.

  5. Step 5

Reapply the bleach solution to stubborn areas and allow the solution to sit. Rinse again after a half-hour. This method should prevent you from having to lift a single scrub brush to clean your house siding.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never use a pressure washer on house siding. Using a high powered spray can damage the siding finish and void the warranty.
