Drafty windows in a home waste a lot of energy in the winter and summer alike. Old windows let cold air in and heated air out during the cold-weather months. In the warmer months when you're running fans or air conditioning, the opposite happens. Drafty windows raise your heating and cooling bills. An easy, economical way to help solve this problem is to cover your windows with Shrink & Seal.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Double-faced tape and heat-shrink plastic sheet
  • Window cleaner
  • Paper towels
  • Measuring tape
  • Scissors
  • Hair dryer
  1. Step 1

Clean the window glass with cleaner and paper towels. Wipe off the window frame and the sill so it's free of dust and dirt.

  2. Step 2

Measure the length and the width of the window frame with the measuring tape. Measure and cut four long strips from the double-faced tape with scissors--one strip for each side of the window. Put the strips on each side of the window frame. Remove the backing from the tape.

  3. Step 3

Unfold the plastic sheet that came in the Shrink & Seal Window Kit. Hold it up over the window. Carefully stretch the top of the plastic out to each side, then press it against the tape.

  4. Step 4

Place your right hand on the heat-shrink plastic and hold it as you gently pull the left side over. Press the plastic against the tape to hold it in place. Then, pull the right side of the plastic over and fasten it in place.

  5. Step 5

Pull the bottom of the plastic down and press it against the tape. Check to make sure the plastic is taut across the window; re-adjust it if necessary. Press the edges of the plastic down onto the tape again to make sure it sticks.

  6. Step 6

Turn the hair dryer on and hold it about 6 inches away from the plastic. Sweep the dryer back and forth across the plastic so the heat will shrink it. Hit every area of the plastic with the heat. You can tell what areas you have done because the heat will remove wrinkles.

  7. Step 7

Trim the excess heat-shrink plastic around all four sides of the window with the scissors.

Tips & Warnings
  • Read and follow the manufacturer's directions on the Shrink & Seal Window Kit to achieve the best results.
  • Do not to hold the hair too close to the heat-shrink plastic or it will melt. Don't touch the plastic with the dryer head either. The heat-shrink plastic is fairly strong. However, it can be torn and punctured easily by dog and cat claws, other sharp objects, and children.
