How to Get a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
A bachelor's degree is a degree from an accredited college or university that traditionally takes 4 years to complete. In order to obtain a bachelor's degree, one must usually complete at least 120 credits of undergraduate coursework in various subjects. A bachelor's degree may be in many subjects such as engineering, history or teaching. A bachelor's degree in nursing is called a BSN, or bachelor's of science in nursing. There are many steps involved in completing one.

Take high school classes in the sciences. In order to complete a bachelor's degree in the field of nursing, knowledge of the hard sciences and math is essential. Prepare for college-level work by completing at least a year of high school biology and chemistry. Take at least 2 years of high school math.

Apply to nursing school. Admission to a 4-year nursing program is highly competitive. Applicants must often demonstrate a high level of academic excellence. Consider completing preliminary coursework at a community college first, where per-credit hours are often cheaper. Credits earned can often be transferred later.

Complete undergraduate liberal arts requirements. Most nursing programs require applicants to complete at least 1 year of coursework in the liberal arts. Coursework can be in nearly any subject you choose, such as music or political science.

Complete hard sciences coursework. Most 4-year degree programs in nursing require completion of coursework in collegiate-level science classes, such as microbiology and organic chemistry.

Complete nursing-specific coursework. All 4-year nursing degree programs require applicants to complete coursework in nursing-specific courses, such as patient care and administration of medication. This is usually done in a hospital setting where students work directly with patients under the supervision of a nursing professor.
